BonBon-Tei(ボンボン亭) - Boiled Gyoza(水餃子)/Chinese Dumpling - Budget Restaurant
Feature
"I'd like to eat fine Boiled Gyoza/Chinese Dumpling." This shop owner tried a number of restaurants. But, none of them pleased him. In the end, he set up his own restaurant. He had success in cooking ultimate Gyoza. Smooth outside, chewy, tender and juicy inside on the tongue. This restaurant serves 4 type of Soup Gyoza.
Sōmen and Rice Cereals. This restaurant serves Yamame(山女)/Landlocked Salmon which has high season in May. |
Fujio Akatsuka and Gyoza
BonBon Tei(ボンボン亭) and Shōwa Retro Goods Museum(昭和レトロ商品博物館) are in the same building next to Akatsuka Fujio Museum(赤塚富士夫博物館). Fujio Akatsuka, a popular manga artist, loved Gyoza, especially Boiled Gyoza. His fondness for Gyoza drived him to cook Gyoza by himself. To my surprize, he cooked 1,000 Gyoza at a time. BonBon Tei displays a booklet of magazine clippings which published Fujio Akatsuka's interviews about Gyoza. Here is one of intriguing articles. In his opinion, men should cook men's food by themselves. Women don't basically and absolutely have taste buds. This is because lipsticks ruin taste buds. He saw instant noodles as the most terrible food. According to his 1970s' article, he mentioned it was decadence that instant noodles were popular among young people. At right that time, two giant hits instant noodles gave their first cries on the market: Nisshin Cup Noodles, Maru-chan Akai Kitsune Udon. Real Gyoza is Boiled Gyoza. The best way to eat Gyoza is to dip it on light taste of mixed sauce with vinegar and soy sauce. Baked Gyoza is for leftovers. |
My Opinion
This is a definitely budget restaurant. You can enjoy Soup Gyoza with 500 yen. Plus, the shop owner can speak English. Must-visit restaurant at Ōme. I'd like to revisit to have a fun with Yamame(山女)/Landlocked Salmon in May. It's little dark to read a book. A staff recommends putting rice cereals into soup like Zosui(雑炊). |
