Tendon(天丼)/Tempura Bowl - Popular Food in Japan
Probably, Tempura is the second food as non Japanese people are asked "What Japanese food do you know?".
The first one is absolutely Sushi. Unfortunately, Both food are too expensive.
They used to be general food for people in Edo period, nevertheless, they become luxurious food these days.
There is nothing like Crispy Tempura!! Soggy Tempura is not Tempura. Perfect Tempura should be Crispy.
Unfortunately, countless Tempura restaurants serve Soggy Tempura, nevertheless it costs over 1,500 yen.
As for Tempura, the best way to eat is to sprinkle salt or Match(抹茶)/Fine Powder Tea on Tempura.
This way keeps Tempura crispy.
However, Tentsuyu(天つゆ)/Tempura Sauce is vital to Tendon(天丼)/Tempura Bowl.
Tentsuyu ruins Tempura, soggy. It's inevitable, no matter how luxurious.
But, I'd like to look for Perfect Tempura. Plus, affordable Tempura is virtue!!

☆ Sakusaku(さくさく)
Feature
Looking for Sakusaku with looking at Google Map, I couldn't find Sakusaku right away. Sakusaku is over this Ferris Wheel. Sakusaku is popular among local people. In my case, I waited outside for 10 minutes or so. There are counter seats on the near side of the entrance and tables seats on the far side. The inside is clean and suitable bright to read a book. The kitchen is in front of counter seats where you can see how a chef cooks. The chef looks young and amiable. He do all cooking work. He cook customers' orders one by one. You need to wait for around 30 minutes until having a fun with Tempura. The specialty is a half-boiled yolk Tempura. The inside is creamy. My Opinion Sakusaku means crispy. I love crispy Tempura. I hold up my hope. But, it's a bit soggy. Little bit of letdown. The chef dips Tempura into Tempura sauce. So, Sakusaku Tempura is less soggier than Hachimaki Tempura. Sakusaku serves a generous portion of food. Especially, a conger eel sticks out of a bowl!! You can change rice size from regular to large for free. Tempura is so big that I want more rice than large. Pumpkin Tempura is a bit tough. I love a tender one. But, it depends on individuals. I can say it's affordable and worth visiting!! |

☆ Hachimaki(はちまき)
Feature
Hachimaki has been in business as a Tempura restaurant since 1931. According to kanda.keizai.biz site, here was a haunt for many literary legends, such as Edogawa Ranpo(江戸川乱歩) whose masterpiece is "Ningen Isu(人間椅子)/The Human Chair" and Ibuse Masuji(井伏鱒二) whose masterpiece is "Kuroi Ame(黒い雨)/Black Rain" and so on. There are counter seats on the near side of the entrance and private rooms on the far side. As all counter seats are taken, a staff usher you into a private room without waiting. In some cases, you can't help but sharing a room. The kitchen is in front of counter seats where you can see how they cook. Its secret sauce is mixed with Katsuo(カツオ)/bonito, Kombu seaweed, Mirin and salt. |
My Opinion
Tempura batter is soggy. But, Ten-Don/Tempura Bowl costs 800 yen at Hachimaki. I can say it's affordable and worth visiting. It's little dark to read a book.
