Here in Japan, we have a strong religious belief called "Yakudoshi(厄年)" which means unlucky ages.
This year I'm in the middle of Taiyaku(大厄). Taiyaku is the most terrible age among Yakudoshi.
The above picture shows your Yakudoshi in 2014. As for Yakudoshi, we generally use Wareki(和暦) which is a unique calender originated in Japan, such as Showa(昭和), Heisei(平成). For your help, here is a Yakudoshi list in 2014 by Anno Domini.

☆ Am I in the middle of Yakudoshi this year in 2014?
As you can see the above tables, it depends on your age and gender whether you are in the middle of Yakudoshi. For example, if you are a male and were born in the red marked year like 1990, 1973, 1954, unfortunately you are in the middle of Yakudoshi in 2014. If you are a female and were born in the red marked year like 1998, 1982, 1978, unfortunately you are in the middle of Yakudoshi in 2014. In another words, this year 2014 is unlucky for you.
You might think "Hey, I was born in 1990. But, I'm not 25."
As for age, Yakudoshi uses Kazoedoshi(数え年)/East Asian Age reckoning.
It's not difficult. Just add "+1" on "your would-be-age this year". That's your Kazoedoshi.
For example,
If you were born on the 10th of January in 1990, you are 24 years old, as of the 12th of January in 2014 and your Kazoedoshi is 25 through this year in 2014.
If you were born on the 10th of May in 1990, you are 23 years old as of the 12th of January in 2014 and your Kazoedoshi is 25 through this year in 2014.

☆ I'm transgender. Which do I choose?
Whichever you want!! In my opinion, Japanese deities might be open-hearted to transgender.
Surely, there was not such technology but some deities wore clothes for opposite gender in Japanese mythology.
However, once you choose, never change!
Like "I already turn into a lady. But, It seems to be unlucky for lady in my age this year. I claim I'm a man!"
If this is your first choice, It's probably OK. But, you choose men's destiny. You can never change from now on.
Don't spoil you!
Japanese deities never forgive you. You would be under divine punishment.

☆ What are these? Maeyaku(前厄), Honyaku(本厄), Atoyaku(後厄) and Taiyaku(大厄)?

Maeyaku is the previous year of Yakudoshi. It means taking care of yourself for bad omens.
Atoyaku is the upcoming year of Yakudoshi. It means that bad luck will dwindle, but still keep in mind.
Taiyaku is like a boss among Yakudoshi. The worst, most terrible, most horrible luck will come to you.

☆ In closing
Lots of people have a ritual to expel their bad luck.
But, Yakudoshi is a superstition. The point is that you don't mind.
I'm not going to have a ritual this year, although I'm in the middle of Taiyaku.
